Introduction:

Argentine Ants originated on the South America continent in the country’s of Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Brazil and Bolivia. They were introduced into North America through the port of New Orleans in the 1800`s. Due to their highly social nature they have established themselves primarily in the American South, but colonies have been found across North America. Including a “mega colony” in California that stretches from San Diego to San Francisco

Habitat:

Argentine Ants build shallow nests usually 1 to 4 inches deep. They prefer moist environments to establish their colonies. Outdoors they’ll be found under rocks, sidewalks, slabs, under wood and bushes usually near their food source. Indoors they gravitate towards sources of moisture, such as sinks, shower drains, leaking pipes and potted plants. It is common for large colonies to have multiple satellite nest around structures and landscaping.

Diet:

Argentine Ants prefer sweet foods, like honeydew, nectar but are omnivores when the situation requires it.
